Our story

You should know who you’re buying from.

There are thousands of anonymous storefronts selling pet things. You can’t tell who is behind any of them. We’re Deni and Helen — a husband and wife — and this one is ours.

The work

What we are making.

Plucky Pet draws cats doing what cats actually do. Not cats in hats, not cats holding wine glasses, not cats saying things. A cat asleep in a sink in the middle of the afternoon, because that is where the warm is.

The first collection is about everyday life with a cat, and the title is the whole brief. Every scene has to be something that already happened in somebody's house — recognisable before it is funny, and funny only because it is true.

We are building a body of work rather than a catalogue. It begins with a small collection of canvases and will grow into other objects as the work earns them, each held to the same question: would the person who lives with this cat recognise her in it?

The objective is narrow on purpose. Not to be the biggest pet store, and not to sell one of everything — to make a small number of things worth keeping about an animal who was never going to sit still for a portrait.

Plucky Pet founders Deni and Helen at home in their kitchen, smiling.

Where I come from.

This part is mine — Deni’s. I grew up in Brazil, around real poverty, and I knew children who were on their own: no parents, no one coming. What that left behind is a permanent attention to anything that arrives in the world with nobody in its corner.

What I love.

Helen and I do not have a cat at home. I came to this category as an entrepreneur: by studying what people live through with their cats, what they ask, and what they notice every day. The more closely I looked, the more I recognised the attention I have always carried for animals and for the people who take them in.

That is who this brand is for: the person who pays close attention to an animal, learns its ways, and makes room for it without asking it to become something else.

Why it reaches me.

I became an immigrant. I moved to a country that was not mine, adapted, and earned my place with no guarantees at the start. So I know in my own body what it is to arrive somewhere frightened and need to be taken in.

Under that is my faith. I believe we were all once lost and taken in, and an animal coming out of hiding is a small version of the same story. It is why I think this one is mine to make.

Our family.

Helen and I are not chasing a logo on a wall. We want to build something we believe in that earns steadily, so that our family is safe for years. There is a symmetry we did not plan and will not pretend away: we are building a safer future for our family by making work about the attention people give the animals in theirs.

What we actually believe

Recognition comes before the joke.

A scene has to feel true before it can be funny. We start with the habits people recognise from living with a cat; the humour comes from seeing them clearly.

A cat stays a cat.

We do not give cats human jobs, drinks, costumes, or dialogue. Their own behaviour is expressive enough, and the work is better when we do not overwrite it.

Quality is the floor.

Colour, detail, reproduction, and the finished canvas have to hold up in the room. That is the minimum for work made to be kept, not a premium claim.

Personalization has limits.

You can choose a coat, add your own text, and select the scene that feels most familiar. We do not ask for a photo or promise a faithful portrait of an individual cat.

The commitment we want to earn

Our mission includes supporting communities dedicated to animal welfare as Plucky Pet grows. We do not have a shelter partnership today, so we will not suggest that we do. When a real relationship exists, we will name the organisation and describe the support plainly.

What we can and can’t prove

We’re early. We have no sales results or customer feedback on the art, and we’re not going to invent any. Our behaviour content draws on what cat owners say in their own words and on five behaviour-science books — John Bradshaw’s Cat Sense, Bradshaw & Ellis’s The Trainable Cat, Jackson Galaxy’s Total Cat Mojo, Pam Johnson-Bennett’s CatWise, and the ACVB’s Decoding Your Cat. Those sources support the guidance we publish; they do not prove that the art will sell. Until real results exist, we will keep those two kinds of evidence separate.

Every Plucky Pet design is created using AI tools in Plucky's illustrated style and reviewed by us before it goes on sale. Plucky is an illustrated character, not a photograph of a real cat.
