Should I let my cat explore the whole new house right away?

No — too much space too fast is the classic setback. Give her one quiet room to own completely first, then open the house a room at a time, always leaving a clear route back. The door you keep closed today is a kindness, not a punishment.

It feels generous to throw every door open so she can “get comfortable,” but to a cat who has just lost her whole map of safe places, a big unfamiliar house is the opposite of comforting — it’s a lot of open ground with nowhere that smells like her yet.

Shrink her world first. One quiet room with her litter box, food, a covered hide, and something that carries the old home’s scent. Let her own that completely before you open the next door, and keep a clear path back to it at all times. You expand her territory as her confidence grows, not before. Avoid giving a shy cat too much space too soon. Expand her space room by room, only once she no longer flees when you enter, and always leave a route back to her safe room (ACVB, Decoding Your Cat, ch. 12; Johnson-Bennett, CatWise, ch. 2; Galaxy, Total Cat Mojo).
